Jardin de la Vigne 2005
Jardin de la Vigne 2005
Perky, Sauvignon-style white from D’Artagnan country (and an inside tip for fans of racy Loire white). So good, many new fans have rushed back for more of the fresh, citrussy flavours. VdP Cotes de Gascogne is one of the big success stories of French country wines. Like Charente to the north (where Cognac is famous), from where we source our Domaine de Liboreau wines, Gascony is a region better known for its Armagnac. Coupled with the decline in the brandy market, massive steps have been taken to boost white wine quality production, bringing out the vibrant, floral characteristics of the Colombard grape in fresh, innovative, and very moreish wines.

Domaine de Fortunet Colombard Sauvignon 2005
This beautiful property has belonged to the Debets family for over 5 generations and is located in Lanne - Soubiran(a little village of 89 people) in the heart of Gascony. With its oceanic climate and just the right mix of sunshine, rain and coolness, the area provides ideal conditions for the production of top-quality wines. The wine was named Fortunet (which means ”fortune”) to describe the success that the estate has enjoyed over the years … ”luck smiled” on the property! The grapes for this white were harvested during the night to retain all the deliciously fresh and zesty fruit character. The result is crisp, fresh and minerally with delicious floral and grapefruit notes. Serve chilled as an aperitif or with creamy chicken or seafood dishes.

Domaine Le Hitton Reserve 2005
Domaine Le Hitton nestles in the heart of rural Gascony. Here the Job family was one of the first to produce crisp, dry whites in the area. Thanks to the estate’s gentle slopes, the vines stay nice and thirsty helping to create zippy, concentrated flavour. From its location off the beaten track, this white blends the regions’ leading varieties to create a superb aperitif. Colombard, the traditional grape of the region, produces delicious, fresh green-apple flavour - whilst Sauvignon brings a grassier crispness and Ugni Blanc adds a little depth. Vibrant gooseberry and lemongrass aromas with a hint of grapefruit. Elegant with grassy, green apple character, and intense citrusy freshness. Irresistible on its own, it’s a top choice for parties too. Serve chilled with vegetable quiche, creamy pasta or light hors d’oeuvres.

Domaine Le Hitton Reserve 2004
Domaine Le Hitton Reserve 2004
Domaine le Hitton is a name to remember. It has the racy, whistle-clean flavours of a good Loire Valley Sauvignon, yet arrives in the UK at a considerably lower price. That’s because it’s from the Gascony region, an insider’s tip hailed by wine writers as one of France’s last bastions of deliciously affordable, high quality whites. Located off the beaten track, Domaine le Hitton produces a reserve wine equal to any Bordeaux Sauvignon, at a mouthwatering price. The family run cellar combines cool climate Sauvignon with Colombard to give crisp, personality filled wine in a zippy, Loire style. Bright gooseberry and lemon grass aromas, with racy, tongue-tingling citrus and freshly sliced green apple flavours. Not surprisingly, this is superb as an aperitif.

Domaine de Pradet Colombard Sauvignon 2004
Domaine de Pradet Colombard Sauvignon 2004
For simple, fresh, fruity whites it is hard to beat trusty Colombard … this traditional French grape was originally from the Charentais in France where it was (and still is) used to make Cognac and Armagnac. Luckily winemakers have experimented! Take Domaine de Pradet. Situated in Bas Armagnac, one of the oldest viticultural regions in France, the estate has long made Armagnac but under the dynamic ownership of husband and wife team of Colette and Guy Vignoli now exploits Colombard’s potential for extremely quaffable, fridge-friendly whites. And they have added extra Sauvignon to give it that zingy, gooseberry freshness. Hence the zestiness of this thrilling, green fruited wine, and the light, herbaceous notes. Clean, fresh, fruity character .. with a hint of crisp apples.

Clos Delem Semillon 2003
Clos Delem Semillon 2003
This ripe, nutty and refreshing Semillon is made at the Clos Delem vineyard in Bergerac to the sunnier south of its famous neighbour, Bordeaux. Normally French winemakers blend this noble grape with Sauvignon but here it is 100% Semillon - given a delicious twist by a talented Australian winemaker, combining fresh, zingy citrussy, New World fruit with classically elegant, Bordeaux-style minerality. Delicious on its own with fresh seafood - and especially wild salmon.
