Laithwaite Viognier 2005
Laithwaite Viognier 2005
Speak to anyone at Laithwaites HQ about our 2005 Viognier and watch a glow of pleasure spread across their face. We’re thrilled with the richly aromatic results. No expense was spared. To source the fruit our chief winemaker Jean-Marc Sauboua went to the premium hillside vineyards of southern France where Viognier ripens to perfection. We then fermented in the very finest French barrels to add integrated layers of complex oak. Big, golden, rich and concentrated! Full of honey, ripe apricots and creamy oak, kept clean by mouthwateringly crisp citrus notes. If you’ve yet to try Viognier, make this your first one!

Reserve de Gassac Grande Cuvee 2004
Reserve de Gassac Grande Cuvee 2004
Aime Guibert’s Mas de Daumas Gassac shot from obscurity 25 years ago to lead a thrilling quality revolution in southern France. His wines were hailed as ‘a miracle’… experts debated whether it was more like Lafite or Latour…revered wine writer and Sotheby’s expert Michael Broadbent described Aime’s white as ”One of the top ten whites in the world.” The Grande Cuvee is made from small patches of vines (mainly ripe, aromatic Sauvignon) growing amid the sparse southern stone and scrub. The wine’s ’secret’ is the careful use of intense but little-known local varieties and light barrel-ageing, lending exotic complexity and uniquely delicious flavours. Bright and herby. A fresher style of Gassac on the nose but the palate is familiar; exotic juicy southern weight and a strong finish. Terrific!

Reserve de Gassac 2004
A harmony of mouthwatering fruit and a rich, creamy texture made just for us in a style recognisable to devotees of the round, apricot-scented #20 a bottle flagship white … only this one is ready to drink now and only #5.84 a bottle. Very versatile with plenty of fresh, ripe fruit and food-friendly richness.

Domaine Les Fontaines Sauvignon Blanc 2004
Domaine Les Fontaines Sauvignon Blanc 2004
The Montarioul family certainly know their grapes - they’ve been sourcing them for years and only pick the best to craft this excellent, fresh Sauvignon, no mean feat in the sun-soaked south of France! If the grapes get too ripe Sauvignon loses its flavour, so you need to pick early - and 2004 helped … it was a cooler summer than the blisteringly hot 2003, allowing a longer, slower ripening time. With the combination of best fruit and the best modern equipment (brand new stainless steel tanks) what you get is an Old World wien made with an innovative New World outlook - richer than a Sancerre but not as in your face as a Kiwi Sauvignon. Soft, concentrated and with a nice minerallity.

Pontilles Sauvignon Blanc 2004
Pontilles Sauvignon Blanc 2004
The writer, broadcaster and Master of Wine Jancis Robinson (among many others) reckons parts of France’s sunny south are now producing some of the most interesting, best value and hand crafted wines to be found in the country. And certainly this richly concentrated Sauvignon twitched judges noses and tantalised their well-worn tastebuds at London’s International Wine Challenge. Its 100% pure Sauvignon grapes - grown on higher and therefore slightly cooler slopes - has delivered a rich wine with gooseberry aromas and a nicely rounded ripe melon flavour. For those of you who like their whites a littles less tangy and grassy than Loire or Kiwi Sauvignons.

Domaine des Oliviers Chardonnay 2003
Gold medal-winning opulence like this only comes with very skillful winemaking - and a stonkingly hot vintage! Sourcing the best grapes from 2003’s tiny yields down in one of the hottest parts of the Midi, the winemakers (big local characters) have used New World techniques to create a uniquely clean but ripe, concentrated Chardonnay. Fresh and dry but with all the great peach, butter and toasty flavours classic to the grape this fills the mouth and leaves it wanting more. Enjoy now, straight from the fridge or let it round off even further over the next couple of years. Vins de Pays are made throughout France but the ones making news are those from the south - where something of a wine making revolution has taken place … attracting interest and investment from big names like Hardy’s and Penfold’s.

Pech de Calade Marsanne 2003
Pech de Calade Marsanne 2003
Whilst holidaymakers wilted in the 40 degree heat in southern France in 2003, Marsanne grapes basked - as far as they were concerned, the hotter the better! Between them the winemakers Pierre Degroote and the Montariol family cherry-picked from their eight outstanding Midi estates the very best fruit for this wine. Pale gold colour with spicy, peachy aromas. Round and creamy with mouthwatering apricot flavour and more complex nutty hints. Great with meaty fish dishes such as baked trout and sea bass.

L’Ecluse Chardonnay 2002
Praised by the press for its flavour, awarded trophies for value and a Silver medal for quality by international judges … this is a perfect, all-round Chardonnay that works as an aperitif, with an entree or with a rich fish dish. From Carcassonne in France’s Midi, this beat four Grand Cru Chablis, four Meursault and top end New World at the International Wine Challenge. The aim was to create a wine that combined the sunshine ripe fruit of the New World with the classy backbone of French Chardonnay. And did they succeed! Almost honeyed on the nose with round, ripe and generous orange scented pear and apricot flavours. Lovely long palate and very well balanced, this is a big, classy Chardonnay that would make a great alternative to Burgundy. Drink to end 2006.
